SFAKA

Sfaka is a small picturesque village with about 400 inhabitants, in Lassithi, Crete. Located in the National Highway Sitia - Agios Nikolaos, it is 33 km from Sitia and 40 km away from Agios Nikolaos.

The name of the village comes from a bush with the name Sfaka (Flomis bushy, Phlomis fruticosa). It is said that in the shadow of this plant the passengers were sitting by in order to rest. From the constant use of "we will sit in Sfaka", at the end the place is commonly called Sfaka. The village was first mentioned in the Venetian census of 1583 under the name «Sfaca», while its older name was Milia.

The Sfaka is one of the most beautiful villages of Eastern Crete and along with its natural harbor Mochlos (Mochlos), is an ideal choice for a quiet holiday. Nevertheless, Mochlos has a rich history and so does its small island "Psillos" , where important Minoan findings have been found during the last decades.

Our living tradition has deep roots and it seems that despite the development and tourism, the village of Sfaka continues to preserve its genuine traditions and customs, something that is also demonstrated by the total participation of Sfaka's habitants during Easter, Christmas and other local and cultural events.
